Running Android App On Emulator

While creating an Android app on http://ai2.appinventor.mit.edu/ you need to have an Android Phone to test the application live and at the same time connected to the same Wi-Fi network i.e. on your laptop. But even if you don't have an android phone, you can test your application by running it on an emulator.

So, first you must know what is an emulator?

According to Wikipediaan emulator is hardware or software or both that duplicates (or emulates) the functions of one computer system (the guest) in another computer system (the host), different from the first one, so that the emulated behavior closely resembles the behavior of the real system (the guest).

In simple terms you simply run a full OS inside other OS! Just like running Linux inside Windows using VirtualBox or VMware Workstation

Installing and Running App Inventor 2 on Windows
  1. Download the installer.
  2. Locate the directory where the file is saved and install it.
  3. Launch aiStarter from the desktop. You'll know that you've successfully launched aiStarter when you see a window like the following:

  4. Now, go to http://ai2.appinventor.mit.edu/ from your Chrome or Firefox browser because App Inventor 2 does't support IE and open a project (or create a new one -- use Project > Start New Project and give your project a name).
  5. Then, from the App Inventor's menu, go to the Connect Menu and click the Emulator option.

  6. You'll get a notice saying that the emulator is connecting. Starting the emulator can take a couple of minutes. You may see update screens like the following as the emulator starts up:

  7. The emulator will initially appear with an empty black screen (#1). Wait until the emulator is ready, with a colored screen background (#2). Even after the background appears, you should wait until the emulated phone has finished preparing its SD card: there will be a notice at the top of the phone screen while the card is being prepared. When connected, the emulator will launch and show the app you have open in App Inventor.
